Same support, same participant — but where you send the invoice depends on how their plan is managed. Send it to the wrong place and you wait weeks. Here's who pays you in each case.
1. Plan-managed The participant has a plan manager — a third party who handles the money. You invoice the plan manager, they pay you (usually within a few days) and claim it back from the NDIA. This is the most common case for new providers, and the easiest to get paid on.
2. Self-managed The participant (or their nominee) manages their own funding. You invoice the participant directly, they pay you, and they claim it back from the NDIA themselves.
3. Agency-managed (NDIA-managed) The NDIA holds the funds. You don't send a paper invoice to the participant — instead you (as a registered provider) submit a payment request through the myplace provider portal and the NDIA pays you directly.
Ask the participant at booking: "Is your plan self-managed, plan-managed, or NDIA-managed?" If they're not sure, ask who pays your invoices — themselves, a plan manager, or "the NDIS portal". That one question saves a lot of chasing.
Whether it's the plan manager, the participant or a portal claim, the line items are the same — dated service lines, hours/units, a GST-free total. Build it once with our free NDIS invoice template, or start free with BookQuo to turn a confirmed booking into a compliant NDIS invoice and send it to whoever pays.
